The Mental Load of Finding Things Challenging and Overwhelming
Exhausted from struggling with every tasks
Does everything feel like it takes extra effort? From getting out of bed to getting ready for school or work—tasks that others breeze through can feel exhausting if you have sensory differences. For some, even simple activities like taking a shower or making breakfast can be overwhelming. This might be due to how sensations are processed, or because extra time is needed for coordination and motor planning.
Many people with sensory differences push through without realising that what feels hard for them may feel effortless to others. Often, it’s not until school—when children start comparing themselves to peers in sports or activities—that differences become noticeable. Sadly, this can come with feelings of distress or inferiority. The truth is, it’s not that you can’t do most activities—it’s that they may take more energy and bring more overwhelm. Think about Christmas markets or holidays. For many, these are exciting events. For others with sensory differences, they can be simply too much.
Carrying the mental load of finding things harder than those around you is heavy. But there is a way forward. The first step is understanding your unique sensory profile. Once you know your preferences and needs, you can create strategies to reduce overwhelm and regain confidence in all areas of life.
